 Course Description  

Theory and hands-on experience in marine inboard engine drive systems with emphasis on shafts, couplings, alignment, stuffing boxes, underwater running gear, rudders, engine throttle and shift controls, repairs and alignments, steering systems, and remote control systems for engine and transmission. Covers operation and maintenance of sterndrives and saildrive types of marine drivetrains emphasizing preventative maintenance and service procedures.


Prerequisite: MT 160 or instructor permission.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Repair damaged inboard drivetrain components by replacing components, including transmissions, motor mounts, propeller shafts, shaft couplings, propellers, struts, and shaft bearings.
  2. Align engine/transmission assembly to propeller shaft to within .001 per inch of coupling diameter.
  3. Replace worn cutlass bearings using common boatyard methods.
  4. Repack worn propeller shaft and rudder shaft packings using common boatyard methods.
  5. Replace worn propeller shaft packings by replacing with dripless shaft packing system.
  6. Adjust cable steering systems for correct freeplay and operation.
  7. Adjust transmission shift cable operation as per transmission manufacturer's specs.
  8. Adjust throttle cable operation as per engine manufacturer's specs.
  9. Remove and install propellers using common boatyard methods.
  10. Demonstrate understanding of the installation and operation of vessel inboard drivetrain systems by passing the course final examination at a minimum of 60%.
  11. Understand the drivetrain in sterndrives, saildrives, and pod drives.
  12. Identify sterndrive and saildrive models by sight, serial, and model number ID plates.
  13. Determine lubrication requirements based on model and type.
  14. Pressure check gearbox to determine condition of shaft seals.
  15. Check propeller shaft for runout using dial indicator.
  16. Remove and replace propeller shaft and seals on common sterndrives.
  17. Remove and replace water pump impeller on older sterndrives.
  18. Check and adjust shift and steering mechanism for proper operation.
  19. Service universal joints by removing sterndrive from transom assembly.
  20. Remove and replace universal joints and check condition of gimball bearing.
  21. Check engine alignment to transom assembly using alignment test bar.
  22. Inspect hydraulic trim/tilt assembly for proper operation.

  4. Troubleshoot problems of Hurth layshaft transmission.
