 Course Description  

This course is non-transferable and for professional/technical students only. Basic mathematics used in several occupational clusters. Estimation, effective calculator usage and practical problem solving techniques explored. Opportunities for variable student pacing may be provided.


Prerequisite: MATH 96 with a grade of C or better, or appropriate test score.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Solve problems involving integers, fractions, and decimal numbers.
  2. Use estimation as problem-solving strategies and to check the reasonableness of calculated results.
  3. Take measurement and make conversions between the English and the metric measurement systems.
  4. Solve practical problems involving linear equations in one unknown.
  5. Solve practical problems involving direct and inverse variation.
  6. Recognize and explain the difference between linear and non-linear equations.
  7. Solve practical problems involving roots and radicals.
  8. Solve practical problems involving quadratics and exponential notation.
  9. Solve problems involving selected topics from: applied geometry (perimeters, areas, volumes), consumer math (bank reconciliation, simple and compound interest), or business math (depreciation, time-value-of-money calculations).
  10. Demonstrate an appreciation for the contributions and uses of mathematics by various cultures.
  11. Understand how mathematics is used in other fields and occupations.
  12. Use basic mathematical skills to solve practical problems arising in several occupational clusters.

  5. Ratio and proportion: percent, proportion, direct and inverse variation
  6. Non-linear equations: exponents and radicals
  7. Applied geometry: basic problems involving perimeter, area, and volume of common geometric shapes.
  8. Consumer math: bank reconciliation, simple and compound interest.
  9. Business math: depreciation, present value, future value, and loan amortization.
  10. Calculator techniques for solving the kinds of problems encountered within the occupational cluster
